Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Choosing the right laptop for your needs isn't too difficult. The first thing you need to think about is how you are going to be using this notebook pc.
For example, are you a gamer? If so, you are going to need a very powerful video card on your laptop. You won't be able to get away with onboard video. Your laptop will probably need to come with a separate video card. There are laptops built for gamers. They are very expensive and can run thousands of dollars. It is usually cheaper for a gamer to buy a desktop pc.

  2. Step 2

If you do a lot of work with photos or have tons of music or videos on your laptop, you are going to want a huge hard drive. Try to find a laptop with at least a 250gb hard drive.
Are you interested in replacing your desktop pc with a laptop? You are in luck. Today's laptops have enough hard drive space, powerful processors and plenty of ram. It can be easy to replace that big, bulky, desktop pc with a modern laptop.

  3. Step 3

If I was purchasing a new laptop today, I would choose one running Vista Home Premium with at least a 250gb hard drive and at least 3gb of ram, preferably 4gb. If your laptop has 4 gb of ram, it will have a 64 bit operating system, which is the way to go. 32 bit operating systems are common but I think it's days are numbered. A laptop with the specs I just mentioned will come with a nice processor. You will want to get at least a core2duo processor. There are great deals on 15 inch screen laptops with 32 bit operating systems. They are affordable and don't hesitate to get one if spending around $600 or less is your budget.
If you can afford around $850, go for a 17 inch screen laptop with a large hard drive, at least 4 gb of ram and a 64 bit operating system. You will probably want to get Vista Home Premium. I believe you have to have Vista Home Premium to get the free upgrade when Windows 7 comes out.

  4. Step 4

All of the major brands have some nice laptops available. Check out the links I have listed in the resource box below this article. You will find some great deals on new laptops.
Please remember that netbooks do not come with hard drives and have small screens. They are suitable for traveling if you just want to connect and go online, they are not desktop replacement laptops.

  5. Step 5

The best advice is always to buy the best machine you can afford to purchase. Make sure to purchase from reputable sellers. Don't forget to get a warranty.
When you find a model you would like to purchase, look up reviews for that model online. Once a model has been on the market for a few months, you can find reviews.
This will help you make an informed decision about which new laptop to purchase.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always read reviews on the model you want to purchase before buying.
  • Don't forget to purchase a warranty.
  • Buy from reputable sellers
