In this article you will be learning how to dissect a frog! A video on how to dissect the amphibian will be coming shortly.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Dissection Kit
  • (Parts of):
  • Dissection Gloves
  • Scalpel
  • Scissors
  • Pins
  1. Step 1

Place the frog in the dissection tin.

  2. Step 2

Flip him over, and observe his/her abdomen.

  3. Step 3

Take your scalpel and make a small incision down the center of the frog's abdomen. Cut away excess skin and pin it to the dissection tin.

  4. Step 4

Looking inside, you should be able to see:

-Heart (small red triangle-located near the throat)
-Small intestine (looks like spaghetti-is located to the left of the stomach
-Stomach (large, floppy material that is in the central lower section of the frog's body)
-Eggs (if it is a female-are blueish-black; are squishy and very gloppy)

    ____

If it is a male, the **** should be external and easily viewed; do not, however, remove the ****, as this can cause serious mutations and excess spillage of preservation liquid.

  5. Step 5

Take your scissors and snip out any connected skin, organs, or other that are holding the eggs in place. Pull them out of the frog's abdomen and place them on a separate tray.

  6. Step 6

Using your scissors, snip away at the connected tissue that holds the stomach in place. Pull it out and place it on the separate tray that is also holding the eggs. Make sure, however, that in order to avoid contamination, that they do not touch.

  7. Step 7

View the small intestine (the gray yellowish material) and the heart (the triangular red shape located near the throat). Make any observations needed.

Tips & Warnings
  • CAUTIONARY ADVICE: Be careful when cutting open the frog. As frogs are famously known for their slippery internal organs and messy parts, if you cut too deep, you may damage an intestine or other part(s) of the frog. Incisions should be deep only enough so that you can penetrate the skin; any deeper than that and you will have unidentifiable frog parts.
