When you are in a court of law you must always behave appropriately. Behaving inappropriately in a court room can cause the judge to find you in contempt. If you are unsure of how to behave properly in a court room follow these tips.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

The first step to behaving appropriately in a court of law is to arrive on time to court. It is a good idea to arrive at least 15 minutes before the time your case is scheduled to be heard. This gives you time to get through security, find the court room, meet with your attorney, and be in your seat before court starts.

  2. Step 2

Make sure you are dressed in clean clothes that are of business type quality. Do not dress sloppy for court. Your appearance matters! Make sure you have washed and styled your hair, done your makeup if you are a woman, and have shaved if you are a man.

  3. Step 3

When addressing the judge speak in a clear and calm tone at all times. Always address the judge as your honor. Do not use any curse words in the court room. Always be polite and considerate to all members of the court, including attorneys, security personnel, and court staff.

  4. Step 4

Whenever the judge or the jury enters or exits the court room you should rise and stay that way until the judge either asks you to be seated or the judge and jury have exited the room.

  5. Step 5

Never take food or drinks into the court room. Do not chew gum in the court room. If you need a drink wait until the judge calls a recess.

  6. Step 6

Shut your cell phone off before entering the court room. Do not leave your cell phone on even if you put it on silent or vibrate. At no time should your cell phone be out of your purse or pocket.

  7. Step 7

When the court hearing is over follow your attorney out of the court room. Do not linger in the court room as the judge needs to move on to hear other cases.
