How to Request a Letter of Recommendation from your Employer
When applying for a job, it is always best to provide the employer with personal and professional references; but you can stand out among the crowd with a letter of recommendation. These letters are usually provided by a recent (or current) employer or faculty member, as well as a supervisor at a volunteer organization you are a part of. Requesting this letter takes tact and planning.

1
Always discuss the recommendation letter with the current employer/faculty member beforehand. Most will be more than glad to do so, but if they decline politely thank them for their time.
-
2
Provide the writer with any information or materials they may need to make the process easier. For example, you can make a list of the classes you had with them, the projects you completed, the work responsibilities and achievements- anything that you think may be important as they are writing.

Your references will typically write letters of recommendation on their own stationery or with their own professional letterhead, so you need not provide them with the paper. You should, however, provide a SASE, or offer to pick up the letter in person. It is a good idea to set a date to pick up the letter a few days before you need it.

Always send a thank you note to the writer after you have received the letter. It is very important to show your appreciation!
