Everyone is feeling the effects of the economic downturn and with financial uncertainty, comes the need to be thrifty. So you don't buy the designer handbag or the new golf clubs... not a big deal. You can wait. Food, on the other hand, is vital. The average 3 person family spends between $150.00 to $200.00 per week on groceries. Depending on where you shop, this may not get you much but... I can show you how to get more and even save money at the grocery store.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1
    Plan your meals

    Plan your meals

Meal planning is very important. Planning your meals for the upcoming week allows you to make one trip to the grocery store. Making several trips during the week may cause you to overspend and buy things you might not necessarily NEED. Doing this one thing will save you a lot of money over the course of a year.

  2. Step 2
    Clip Those Coupons

    Clip Those Coupons

Clipping coupons is also a good way to save money. Coupons can be found in your Sunday paper as well as certain internet sites like Coupons.com. You can even sign up using your email address and they will send you new coupons every month. Fifty cents may not seem like much but some stores double the coupon up to, as much as, $1.00. If you save $5.00 per week by using coupons, over the course of a year you have saved $260.00 in groceries. ( I have saved as much as $20.00 in one week using coupons alone)

  3. Step 3
    Outlet Shopping...

    Outlet Shopping...

Another good way to save money is to shop at a local Bargain Grocery Outlet. These stores carry closeout items from stores such as Publix, Target and even Wal-Mart. Items such as Wheat Thins, Triscuits, Cascadian Farms, Kraft and Kellogg can be found at these stores for a fraction of the price.

  4. Step 4
    Give Big Lots a try!

    Give Big Lots a try!

Big Lots is another great place to shop. The selection of actual food items is slim but you can still find some great deals!

  5. Step 5
    Save money, buy generic

In the end, just be sensible when shopping. Make sure that the item is something that you use frequently. Don't be suckered in to Impulse Shopping. Remember, a "name brand" doesn't necessarily mean a better brand. Don't be afraid to shop generic brands. Your wallet will thank you.
