How to Crochet Tunisian Cables

Cables make your finished item look better. But Tunisian cables are a challenge. Here are some steps to help create a lovely piece of crochet magic...

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Afghan crochet hook
  • regular crochet hook same size as afghan hook
  • yarn
  • also helpful is a cable needle or double point knitting needle
  1. Step 1

    Chain 12 stitches or multiples of 6 + 2. For first row TSS (Tunisian Simple Stitch), 2nd row Tunisian purl the row.

  2. Step 2
    TKS 2, 3 loops on hook
     
    TKS 2, 3 loops on hook

    Now it's time for the cables....Tunisian knit stitch (Tks) 2 stitches (pick up 2 loops)...

  3. Step 3
     

    Pick up 3 vertical bars with second crochet hook but don't pick up a loop. Slide onto cable needle or double point knitting needle. Place behind afghan hook.

  4. Step 4
     

    Using afghan hook pick up loops on next 3 stitches.

  5. Step 5
     

    Return to 3 stitches on cable needle/double point and pick up the loop (tks) using the second crochet hook beginning with the loop on the right.

  6. Step 6
     

    Bring the 3 stitches on the second crochet hook to the left of the afghan hook. Slide the stitches onto the afghan hook.

  7. Step 7

    TKS 2 stitches and repeat steps 3-6.

  8. Step 8

    Repeat step 7 until end last stitch is reached. Yarn over pull thru 1 loop, yarn over pull thru 2 loops until beginning is reached

  9. Step 9

    TKS next row. Repeat cable row with a row of TKS between each cable row.

Tips & Warnings
  • Basic knowledge of Tunisian crochet and cables required
  • Not easy the first time but gets easier with practice
  • May cause extreme frustration the first time it is attempted
