Step 1
Break Larger Goals into More Attainable Goals. There is nothing worse than having an unreachable goal – and by making yours too large, you could become discouraged with it. Start by breaking your larger goals into smaller ones that are easier to achieve. For instance, if you want a promotion at work, some smaller goals might be:
- Show up early for work at least 3 times a week.
- Voice my interest in a higher position at work.
- Go beyond what I’m supposed to do each day, to show my worth.
These are great small goals that will lead to the completion of the larger goal in the long run. By creating smaller goals, it will be easier to attain the larger one. -
Step 2
Take Advantage of Goal-Tracking Websites. There are some great free tools you can use to ensure that you are keeping up with your goals and accomplishing what you set out to do. One of those is www.43things.com – this is an online community and goal tracking website that will help keep you focused on your goals and check in with others who have goals as well. A few other good ones include www.JoesGoals.com and www.GoalEnforcer.com. These websites allow you to document your goals – which help you remember them more easily and will motivate you to get them accomplished.
-
Step 3
Make an Announcement. One of the easiest ways to ensure that you achieve your goal is to make a goal announcement. Tell your family, friends, online contacts and others that you plan to accomplish a particular goal. The reason this works so well is that you will be more likely to achieve your goal to prove to your family and friends that you can do it after you’ve announced it to them! The feeling of failure is a powerful motivator – just make sure your goal is small enough so that it is actually attainable.
-
Step 4
Get Support to Stay Motivated. There are many different websites and forums that are specifically designed to provide support for those with goals they are trying to achieve. Join one or more of these websites and develop friendships with others in the groups. You might start a ‘goal’ group on Facebook or another social networking site – or join one that already exists.
A great one is groups.yahoo.com/phrase/achieving-their-personal-goals – which helps individuals will all kinds of different goals. You should also check locally to see if there are any support groups for the kind of goals you’re trying to achieve. By getting much-needed support, you can stay motivated to achieve your goals.
By using the steps above, you can more easily achieve your goals and grant your own last request.
