How to Turn Your Lotion Into Body Butter

How to Turn Your Lotion Into Body Butterthumbnail
If desired, add several drops of the fragrance oil of your choice before mixing.

Body butter is generally thick and creamy and hydrates even very dry skin. You can make your own body butter at home using the lotion of your choice as a base. You will need cocoa and shea butters, which may be difficult to find unless you go to specialty beauty or health stores or online. Once you have all the ingredients, whip up a batch of body butter for yourself or as a gift for someone else.

    Things You'll Need

    • 8 oz. lotion
    • 1 tbsp. pure shea butter
    • 2 tbsp. pure cocoa butter
    • Hand mixer or whisk
      • 1

Place the shea and cocoa butters in a small glass bowl. Microwave at 40 percent power in one-minute intervals until the butters are melted.

      • 2

Empty the lotion into a separate glass bowl and warm it up in the microwave at 40 percent power for one to two minutes. The lotion needs to be about the same temperature as the butters. Make sure the lotion does not come to a boil.

      • 3

Mix the lotion and melted butters together with a whisk or hand mixer until light and creamy. Refrigerate the body butter until it thickens and sets.

    Tips & Warnings

    • If the body butter isn't thick enough, add 1/2 tsp. of melted beeswax.

    • If the body butter turns out grainy, remelt the mixture and whip it again with the hand mixer or whisk.
