Pack a backpack. For each person, be sure to have bottled water, a non-perishable snack, such as granola bars or peanuts, and extra socks. Be sure that the backpack is easy enough to carry. If necessary, pack more than one bag and have each adult or older child wear one.

Dress in layers. While it might be cool when you leave for your hiking trip with children, chances are that it will get warmer as the day progresses. Conversely, while it may be warm and sunny at the beginning of the hiking trail, it may be cooler under the canopy of shady trees. Wear long pants to protect your legs from scratches. If you live in an area that is prone to tick infestation, wear light colors and try to wear long sleeves.

  3. Step 3
    Wear sturdy shoes.

Wear sturdy shoes. Hiking boots or sneakers with some tread are good choices. Remember that you will potentially have to walk up or down hills, on loose dirt, through mud, or on slippery leaves. Wear shoes that you don't mind getting dirty.

  4. Step 4

Before you leave for your hike, put sunscreen and a safe insect repellant on each person. Sunburn and mosquito bites can put a damper on any hiking trip.

  5. Step 5

When you are done hiking, check each person for ticks. Shake out any layers of clothing that were removed to remove sticks, grass, spiders, and anything else that might be stuck.

Tips & Warnings
  • Leave the area as you found it. Do not leave any garbage behind, and do not take any flowers, plants, or animals with you.
  • Familiarize yourself with the poisonous plants in your area, and avoid them on your hiking trip with children.
