How to Keep Drains Clean and Fresh Naturally
With poor care even the best home plumbing systems can become clogged and stinky. Avoid annoying clogs and smelly drains through proper home maintenance of your kitchen, bathroom and washroom drains. You don't need an assortment of chemicals to minimize drain odors or to keep your sinks fresh. In fact, use household items to prevent clogged drains, but to clear them if they do become clogged. Use a plunger to unclog your drain. Plungers are relatively inexpensive and available in the bathroom or home improvement section of most home and garden stores. Place the plunger over the drain in your sink and use the handle to push and pull several times to unclog your drain.

Run your garbage disposal immediately if you wash food particles down your sink. If you wait a few days or even a few hours before utilizing the disposal function, your sink could begin to smell.

Place a few lemon slices down your kitchen sink drain. Lemon neutralizes foul odors and will help your sink smell fresh and clean.

Pour 1 cup of baking soda and 3 cups of hot water down your drain. This works if your drain is clogged but has not overflowed. Repeat several times until your drain is completely clear.

Use vinegar in your drain if baking soda alone isn't strong enough. Pour 1 cup of baking soda, 1 cup of vinegar and 3 cups of boiling hot water down your drain to loosen any debris that may be clogged.
