You can store needles for sewing in these easy to make needle cases. If you sew a lot, you may find yourself hunting for a spare sewing needle only to discover the pincushion ate it again. :) Organize your needles with this quick project.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Felt
  • sewing machine, thread
  • scissors
  • straight pins
  • embroidery thread
  • trim of choice
  • elastic thread
  • button or bead
  • iron and ironing board
  1. Step 1
    Cut two rectangles.

    Cut two rectangles.

To make needle cases to store needles for sewing projects, cut two rectangles of felt that measure 7 1/2" long x 3 1/2" wide. Decide what type of design you want to make on the front of your needle case.

Fold one of the rectangles in half and mark with a straight pin at the halfway mark before you begin hand sewing; this will keep the design on the correct side.

  2. Step 2
    Sew front design.

    Sew front design.

To enhance the needle case, a simple flower can be cut out of colorful felt pieces and sewn on top with embroidery thread. You may also store needles for sewing in a more personalized case where you can sew an initial on top with faux pearls.

  3. Step 3
    Tack closure loop.

    Tack closure loop.

Cut a short section of elastic thread and fold into a loop. Tack the thread to the center of the short edge of needle case, opposite of the design. Make sure the actual loop is pointed towards the design on top.

  4. Step 4
    Sew right sides together.

    Sew right sides together.

Pin right sides together, sew 1/4" from edge leaving an approximately 3" opening at center bottom of seam. Trim corners, turn right side out.

Notice the loop is securely sewn into the seam and is now in a working position. Gently push out corners with pencil eraser. Slip stitch opening closed. For extra security, sew a short straight stitch and backstitch with the machine on top of the needle case just next to the elastic loop.

  5. Step 5
    Cut 2 inside pages.

    Cut 2 inside pages.

Store needles for sewing by making pages for your needle cases. To make the felt pages, cut one rectangle 6" long x 4" wide. Cut the second rectangle 6" long x 2 1/2" wide. Fold up 1 1/2" on the first rectangle and pin in place on sides.

Take this first rectangle to the sewing machine. Sew close to edge of the rectangle sides forming a pocket.

  6. Step 6
    Fold in center.

    Fold in center.

Fold the needle case cover and the two pages exactly in half. Make a firm crease with your fingers. Matching the middle creases, lay the blank rectangle on top of the pocketed rectangle.

Position the two rectangles centered on top of the needle case cover and pin in place. Stitch directly down the middle creased line though all three layers.

  7. Step 7
    Needle cases.

    Needle cases.

Sew a button or bead on the center top of the needle case cover, directly opposite the elastic loop. Close the needle case by stretching the loop around the button or bead.

Store needles for sewing in these cute needle cases. Slip a small pair of folding scissors into one of the pockets, so you'll have them handy when you sew.

Make a monogrammed needle case for your mom, a co-worker or a friend. Design each case individually to suit the recipient or make up a bunch to sell at a church bazaar or craft fair. Enjoy!

Tips & Warnings
  • You can make one needle case out of a single sheet of felt and still have material left over. Buy a half dozen sheets at 25 cents each and make 6 needle cases for a total of $1.50 plus the cost of trim and embroidery thread, buttons or beads. Many of these items you may already have at home.
  • This would make a wonderful gift for Mom or a special someone on Mother's Day.
  • Be as inventive as you wish on your design and the shape of your needle case. Use scrap materials instead of the felt for an entirely different look and feel.
  • If gifting a needle case, you may wish to insert a small pair of folding scissors and a bit of thread off the spool into the pockets. Buy a few new sewing needles also and secure on one of the inner felt pages.
