Keep Cats and Dogs out of your Garden

Dogs and cats can be a real pain when they dig up your lawn or newly planted seeds. Fortunately there are many easy ways of keeping them out of your yard or vegetable garden.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Electronic Scarers
  • Fencing
  • Bottles of water
  • Sprinklers
  1. Step 1

The first thing to do when keeping dogs and cats out of your garden is to fence off the most vulnerable areas. These being things like newly planted flowers or vegetables. Fences will only keep out some dogs and cats however and further steps are necessary to keep them out altogether.

  2. Step 2

If you have a large lawn area, then one good way to keep dogs and cats away is through the use of a motion detecting sprinkler system. Basically these work by turning on when anything gets too close to them, and spraying anything that might be trying to defecate on your lawn.

  3. Step 3

Generally water is more than enough to scare off cats, although some dogs will actually enjoy the feeling of being sprayed with water and might think they are being played with. If dogs are more of a problem than cats then a scarer is generally a better method.

  4. Step 4

Another option is the use of Scarers, which can be bought in hardware stores and garden centers. These work by emitting a very high pitched noise when anything enters the yard, which humans cannot hear but dogs and cats can. The noise created by these devices will then scare any dogs and cats away and keep them away.

  5. Step 5

Cheaper alternatives are also available, such as the use of bottles of water or CDs hanging from trees. however these methods are generally only useful when dealing with cats, and dogs are often undeterred by these kinds of things.

Tips & Warnings
  • There are also numerous plants which cats and dogs don't like the smell of, although they don't always work all of the time.
  • You shouldn't use any drastic methods if you have pets of your own that will suffer as a result.
