Choose Good Fitting Walking Shoes

Good fitting shoes are key to maintaining a walking exercise program. If they hurt, or cause blisters, you won't want to walk in them. Start by trying shoes on in the store. Make sure to wear socks while trying shoes on.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • socks
  1. Step 1

Shoes should be adequate length and have some give. There should be a finger's width between the tip of the shoe and your longest toe.

  2. Step 2

Shoes should lace to conform to the contours of your feet.

  3. Step 3

The sole should be a wedge shape, with your heel resting about an inch off the ground and about one-half to three-quarters of an inch higher than your toes.

  4. Step 4

If your little toe feels squished or is rubbing against the side, the shoe is too small. You should be able to wiggle all your toes slightly.

  5. Step 5

The sole should not have a space or a break at the arch. This allows your weight to "transmit" as you step.
