Letter recognition is an important skill for preschoolers to learn. By offering a variety of activities based on a certain letter, they will be better able to recognize the letter and the sound it makes. These letter J activities will work well for any preschoolers working on letter recognition.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Introduce the letter J to your preschooler before introducing the letter J activities. Show your child how the letter J looks and talk about how it sounds.

  2. Step 2

Make Jello Jigglers with your preschooler. After the Jello Jigglers are set, use a letter shaped cookie cutter to cut out the letter J.

  3. Step 3

Make a jeweled letter J. Cut a letter J shape out of cardboard. Have your preschooler paint the letter J and attach jewels to the cut out. Hang the letter J in a prominent spot so she can see it when you complete the rest of the steps.

  4. Step 4

Create a letter J themed guessing jar by filling a glass jar with jelly beans. Have your child guess how many jelly beans are in the jar. Count the jelly beans together to see how close the guess came to being correct.

  5. Step 5

Practice jump roping. You can also use a jump rope to make a giant letter J outside or in a large room.

  6. Step 6

Make a jellyfish to hang. Paint a paper plate. Attach several pieces of streamers. To reinforce the recognition of the letter J, paint the letter on the paper plate.

  7. Step 7

Play the jumping J game. Cut out several large letter J templates from cardboard. Have your child paint them if desired. Tape them to the floor. Have your child jump from one letter J to the next.

  8. Step 8

Tell jokes with your preschooler. Get a joke book meant for kids and read several of the jokes. Practice telling jokes to each other. Encourage your preschooler to make up her own jokes.

  9. Step 9

Review the letter J after all of the steps have been completed. Talk about the sound that it makes and the shape of the letter. Review the different objects you discovered that start with the letter J.

Tips & Warnings
  • Remember to make the letter J activities both fun and educational. Children are more likely to learn if they're having fun.
