Planning letter I activities for your preschool child is a great way to work on letter recognition. Many words start with the letter I and can be used as the basis of educational activities.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Introduce your child to the shape and sound of the letter I. Talk about different items that start with the letter I.

  2. Step 2

Allow your child to play with ice. Put a few ice cubes in a pie pan or other baking dish. Encourage your child to explore the properties of the ice. Try to figure out ways to make it melt quickly. Add water to the ice and observe what happens.

  3. Step 3

Build an igloo out of sugar cubes. Use frosting to hold the sugar cubes together to form the igloo. Show your child pictures of igloos so they get an idea of the shape.

  4. Step 4

Use an ink pad to make fingerprint pictures. Have your child press his finger on the ink pad and then on a piece of paper. Make shapes out of fingerprints or use crayons to add details to the fingerprints.

  5. Step 5

Make homemade ice cream. If you don't have an ice cream maker, you can make ice cream in baggies. See the resources section below for the recipe. You could also set up an ice cream sundae bar.

  6. Step 6

Encourage your kids to become inventors. Gather lots of items from around the house such as cereal boxes, paper towel tubes, rubber bands, coffee filters and anything else you discover. Have your child use the supplies to invent something. Have him explain what it is what its purpose.

  7. Step 7

Go on an insect hunt in the neighborhood. Take pictures of the insects you discover. Try to identify the types of insects.

  8. Step 8

Review the letter I and the sound that it makes at the end of your lessons. Review the different objects that start with the letter I.

Tips & Warnings
  • Encourage your child to find objects all around that start with the letter I.
  • Take every opportunity to review the letter I and the sound that it makes.
