Draw An Easy Dragonfly

Did you know Dragonflies eat mosquitoes and other insects? They catch the insects in the air with their legs, while flying. Dragonflies bodies are long and thin. They have two sets of transparent wings that measure from 2 to 8 inches long. They vary in color from green, blue or red. Dragonflies lay their eggs in water or on plants near water. Young dragonflies are called nymphs and when they hatch, they have gills and live underwater for up to five years. The nymph molts ten or more times before climbing out of the water. With one last molting, it flies away. Dragonflies can fly up to 60 miles per hour.

Instructions

      Draw An Easy Dragonfly

To start your Dragonfly drawing, draw two small circles. These are your dragonflies' eyes. Put two dots in the circles to complete the eyes. Using two curved lines, make your dragonfly head.

    • 2
      Body, Mouth and Antennae

Draw an oval leaving a small area not closed. This is the body. A small line between the eyes makes the mouth. Now put two small lines going out of the dragonflies head. Put a small dot on the end of each line for the antennae.

      Wings...I can fly

Draw a long oval where the body was left open. Draw a partial oval beside. Do the same thing on the other side. You now have wings.

    • 4
      Draw the Tail...

At the back end of your dragonflies' body, draw seven small squares with rounded corners. At the end of the last square, draw two curved lines that connect (like an M only rounded tops instead of pointy ones). Now you've finished the tail!

      A few More Details

Put some lines in the wings to add some details. To give the illusion of movement, put some small curved lines just outside the wings and more at the tail.

      Make it Your Own...

Finish up the dragonfly with your own embellishments.
