Grommets are a handy tool for a variety of sewing projects. Anytime you want a secure hole in your fabric, inserting a grommet is a good idea. These holes can be used for stringing up hammocks or tents, creating holes for a corset-style top or dress or just for decoration. Make sure that your grommets are properly inserted to ensure that they protect the hole in the fabric and don't come loose.

Things You'll Need:

    Putting Grommets on Fabric

  1. Step 1

Lay your fabric flat and mark the intervals needed for your grommets. Take into consideration the size of the grommet, and mark an appropriately sized hole.

  2. Step 2

Cut a small hole into the fabric for each mark. Make sure that the hole is large enough to insert the grommet comfortably through the fabric. The grommet will mask rough edges, so this opening doesn't need to be perfect.

  3. Step 3

Insert the first half of the grommet through the hole. This is the side that does not have teeth, and instead sticks out so that you can insert it through the fabric. This grommet should be inserted so that the front is visible on the front side of the fabric.

  4. Step 4

Place the shorter half of the manual grommet setter beneath the grommet in the fabric. You will need to work on a hard surface for the next step, so make sure that you are working on concrete or a similar material that can withstand some hammering.

  5. Step 5

Place the top half of the grommet onto the projecting end of the first half. This side of the grommet has small teeth that will grab onto the fabric.

  6. Step 6

Place the larger, top end of the grommet setter on top of the grommet. Using your hammer, pound the grommet setter until the grommet has been secured in the fabric. Repeat these steps for each subsequent grommet until your project is completed.

Tips & Warnings
  • Carefully measure your selected grommets before you begin to install them. Make sure that any rope or string you will be passing through the grommet will fit comfortably.
