How to Identify Spider Egg Sacs

Finding a spider in your house is always an unpleasant surprise. But finding spider eggs is a little more of a shock. Identifying spider eggs can be fairly simple. They are different from normal bug eggs in a number of ways, and early identification can lead to easier extermination. Once you've identified a sac, you can also identify the kind of spider which may be causing trouble in your home or yard.

    Instructions

      • 1

Look for any weblike casings around the pouch. Female spiders will often wrap their eggs into a little case which can contain up to a few thousand spider eggs.

      • 2

Note the location of the possible egg sac. Though some species of spiders will carry their egg sacs with them, others will leave their egg sacs behind and buried in the soil.

      • 3

Note the shape of the possible egg sac. Most egg sacs are round, but many can also be pillow-shaped or arranged about a much larger web. Based on the shape of the egg sac, you should be able to gauge an idea of what kind of spider you may be encountering. See Resources below for more.

See if the egg sac has any silk strands coming off of it. This will indicate that it was at one point attached to a larger web, as many spiders often attach their egg sacs to their webs.

    Tips & Warnings

    • Be careful when dealing with the egg sac. In some cases, the female spider may be lurking about and will bite you if she sees you tampering with her nest.

How long does it take for baby spiders to come out of the sac? I have a Mom Spider and her sac attached to my screened in back porch. I can't identify what kind of spider she is, and I'm wondering if I should let them hatch there or if that would be dangerous since I don't know if she's poisonous. She looks very different since her sac was removed from her body and moved about a foot away from her. Watching her activities has been quite entertaining, and I would like to see this through unless it's dangerous for me.
