How to Identify Personal Computer Memory Sticks
Before a computer's memory sticks can be upgraded or replaced, the user must know what type of memory the system takes. The operating system only provides limited information, such as memory capacity. For more detailed information, the sticks must be identified by physically removing them from the system and writing down the information printed on the sticks. The required steps may vary slightly from these instructions, depending on the type of computer being worked on.

1
Shut down the computer, and unplug it from the wall power source. If the computer is a desktop, remove the two screws securing the left side panel to the case, and slide it directly towards the back of the system until it is free. For a laptop computer, turn the system upside-down, and remove the screw holding the RAM access panel in place. Pull the panel off and lay it aside.

2
Locate a memory module. On a laptop computer, the module will be located directly under the panel that was just removed. The module will be more difficult to locate on a desktop computer. Look for a long, thin stick mounted vertically inside a slot on the motherboard. Often, there will be more than one module installed.

Remove one of the memory modules. On a desktop computer, press down the plastic tabs located on either side of the memory stick. The module will now be elevated slightly, and is free to be removed. Laptop memory can be removed by pulling apart the tabs on either side of the module, tilting it away from the board until it is at a 45 degree angle, and then sliding it out.

4
Look at the sticker on the side of the module. This will contain all of the detailed information you might need to know, such as manufacturer information, memory capacity, frequency, timing speeds, and type of RAM. Write down these details on a piece of paper, and reinstall the memory by reversing the steps used to remove it.
