How to Clean Outdoor Fountains

Because of the wet conditions and sunlight outdoors, most fountains begin to have algae growth in them. However, regular maintenance can prevent or minimize this growth. How you clean your outdoor fountain varies depending on the time of year and the climate in which you live. People in the southern U.S., such as those in Florida, won't have to do cold weather cleanings. But, someone living in Indiana or Minnesota will have to do the cold weather cleaning. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

  1. Warm Weather Cleaning

    • 1

Skim debris out of the water daily to avoid a blockage in the pump or lines.

    • 2

Turn off the pump and remove it. Some pumps may have to be unplugged and others have an on/off switch. You should be able to slide the pump up and out of the brace.

    • 3

Wipe the outside of the pump with a towel. Clean the intake and outgoing spouts with a toothbrush. Replace the pump and turn it back on.

    • 4

Clean out the water reservoir with a clean cloth. If you have algae growth in it, use a wildlife safe cleaner to remove it (see Resources). Bleach isn't a good product to use, as it can harm birds and other animals.

    Cold Weather Cleaning

    • 5

Turn off the fountain pump. Drain the fountain completely. The method for doing this depends upon the model of fountain you have. Some fountains have a drain plug and in others, the water has to be pumped out.

    • 6

Wipe off the pump and clean the spouts with a towel and toothbrush.

    • 7

Clean the interior of the fountain using white vinegar and a soft brush. This is easier on the environment and more wildlife friendly than bleach. Get in the crevices and creases by using a toothbrush.

    • 8

Dry the fountain, especially if it is a cement fountain. The cold weather makes water expand, which can crack a cement fountain.

    • 9

Check the fountain once a week or after significant rainfall or snow. If you see water in it, dry it out.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you live in an area where you don't have to perform cold weather cleanings, you should drain your fountain at least once per year and refill it with clean water.
