If you've ever tried to take a temperature reading on a sick child, you know it is not an easy task. Many manufacturers have their own lines of underarm thermometers that make it much easier to get an accurate temperature reading. The different models take anywhere from 8 seconds to 5 minutes to get an accurate reading. Although using an underarm thermometer is relatively simple, you will need to know how to interpret the reading so you have an accurate account of your child's condition.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn on the start button if your brand of thermometer does not start automatically. Set the underarm thermometer into the armpit. Place it up high, right in the crease of the armpit.

    • 2

Hold the arm down so that the thermometer remains securely in place. Once the thermometer beeps, remove it from the armpit.

    • 3

Read the temperature that is on the screen and write it down. The normal temperature for an underarm reading is in the range of 97 to 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit, or 36.1 to 37 degrees Celsius.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure the underarm is dry when taking the temperature. Contact your physician if your child's temperature remains raised.

  • Don't cause a sick child further irritation by taking her temperature too many times, no matter how concerned you are. Once in the morning and once at night should be sufficient, unless instructed by your physician to do otherwise.
