You should have a clear, unobstructed view when looking out of the windows of your home. However, smudges and dirty spots happen. Cleaning the inside of double pane windows is possible only if you have double hung tilting windows. If both panes are in a single sash, you will have to have the entire window removed, and possibly replaced to get the interior clean.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Tilt the window out. The method of doing this depends on the type of double hung windows you have. Some windows have a top latch that must be released in order to tilt the windows. Others must be raised to a certain point then tilted out.

  2. Step 2

Clean the outside of the window using horizontal strokes using plain white vinegar and paper towels. Once you do this, put cotton gloves on to prevent fingerprint markings.

  3. Step 3

Spray plain vinegar on a paper towel. Wipe the interior of the window using vertical strokes. Dry the glass with a clean paper towel.

  4. Step 4

Inspect the window for streaks or smudges. If they are top to bottom, they are on the interior and need to be addressed before replacing the window. However, if they are side to side, they can be addressed after the window is replaced.

Tips & Warnings
  • If the interior of the double pane window has a foggy or smoky appearance, the seal between the two windows is broken. When this happens, the seal and/or windows have to be replaced. If the windows are under warranty, contact the installer for an inspection.
