Instructions

    • 1

Mark the floor where the threshold will meet the carpet by laying out the threshold and drawing a line of the floor with a pencil, taking care that the threshold is even to the doorway.

    • 2

Measure a piece of tack strip to the length of the threshold and cut with a miter saw or hack saw, wearing gloves to avoid the tacks.

    • 3

Lay the tack strip so it is 1/4 inch away from the threshold line and nail it into the floor, making sure the top side tacks are slanted toward the threshold.

    • 4

Stretch the carpet to overlap the tack strip by 1/4 inch by shoving the carpet toward the threshold with a piece of 2-by-4.

    • 5

Secure the carpet on the tacks, pressing firmly to ensure it is fastened.

    • 6

Install the threshold, using the proper adhesive for the type of threshold you have chosen. If the threshold is marble or ceramic, allow to dry and cure as per the instructions on the mastic or mud.

    • 7

Tuck the edge of the carpet into the 1/4-inch gap between the tack strip and the threshold, using a putty knife and taking care not to snag and unravel the carpet fibers.
