Step 1
The first thing you want to ask yourself is, " Are the store associates knowledgeable and willing to help me?" Many times when you go into a large chain hardware store it is very difficult to find help. This can be very discouraging and make you feel frustrated. Going to the hardware store should no make you frustrated. It should give you a feeling of enjoyment by knowing you will be helped if you need it and you will get what you need to get the job done. The associates should also be knowledgeable in all departments and all hardware needs. If you are shopping for a kitchen faucet the associate should be able to advise you to not forget the hoses needed to do the job correctly the first time. If you want a good hammer the associate should ask you what you will be doing with the hammer so he will give you the best type of hammer for the application.

Step 2
The second question you should ask yourself is " What quality tools and hardware do they sell?" The most upsetting thing when you are doing a repair or maintenance project is to have poor quality tools and hardware to work with. Most of the time you end up having to do the job twice and end up wasting more money because of the poor quality tools and hardware. A good hardware store should have good quality tools and hardware. If you want to get a water hose and good sprayer to water the grass you should be confident they will hold up to the elements and not become brittle and break. The quality of the hardware stores tools and hardware is a must.

Step 3
The third thing you should ask your self is " Are the things i have needed in the past available when i need them?" When you really get excited about buying a new cordless drill to put up the new backyard fence and they don't have cordless drills or backyard fences it put a damper on the whole project and will delay the project entirely. The hardware store should have a strong inventory for all repair and home improvement supplies when you need them. Usually when a store holds a good inventory they tend to have good sales also because they buy in bulk from their vendors.
