Refinishing existing cabinets is a cost-effective way to freshen up your kitchen. However, if the hinges on the cabinets remain dingy or out-of-date, the overall effect of the refinishing project is diminished. Replacing the hinges can be costly, but if you take the time to clean up and paint the existing cabinet hinges, you can maximize your results at a minimal cost.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Select your paint. Do not attempt to apply latex or other brush-on paint to hinges, as it will impede the movement of the hinge and scratch off easily. Choose a spray paint that is formulated for metal in a color that complements your cabinets.

  2. Step 2

Using a screwdriver, remove the hinges from the cabinet frames and doors. If you have a large number of cabinets, a power drill with a screwdriver bit may be helpful.

  3. Step 3

Clean the hinges. Very dirty or rusty hinges should be cleaned with a wire brush dipped in CLR before being wiped with a damp rag. If there is no rust and the hinges are only slightly dirty, they may simply be cleaned with the rag alone.

  4. Step 4

Following the paint manufacturer's instructions for application, paint the hinges. While it is generally not necessary to paint the back side of the hinge plates, be sure to paint both sides of the center of the hinge in both an "open" and "closed" position to ensure thorough coverage.

  5. Step 5

After the paint has dried, reattach the hinges to your cabinets.

Tips & Warnings
  • During cleaning, it may be necessary to temporarily disassemble the hinges. If so, be sure to reassemble them before painting. Applying paint to the hinge pin itself or inside of the barrel may inhibit movement.
