Sketch out your design ideas in a sketchbook. Try and fine-tune your design to the person who will be receiving the card. For example, if the person is somewhat blue about growing a year older, a joke that will make them laugh about their aging worries might be the perfect way to lighten their spirits. A child, on the other hand might laugh at a design that depicts a cute puppy being mischievous on their birthday and falling into a big bowl of ice cream. Whatever design you choose, remember to make it age appropriate. You don't have to come up with your own joke or funny concept. You can look online and in books to get ideas for your card.

Design your card using a graphics program like Photoshop. However, if your design is a simple one, you can also use the basic paint program that comes with Windows, or try Corel Draw or Art Rage. When you open a new document, save the proper dimensions for your card's width and height as well as the resolution you want.

Work in layers as you add new elements, as this allows you to more easily go back and make changes as you create your design. When you add your text, use a font that is appropriate to the theme of the card. If you are giving the card to a child, then a simple comic style font might work, while something for grandma might need a cursive script.

Use filters, the fill pattern tool and gradients to create special effects. Even create your own specialized color swatches as you work. Also, if you are working in Photoshop, don't forget the blend modes at the bottom of the "Layers" panel, which has effects such as "Glow" and "Drop Shadow." Since this is a document that you will be printing out, you should save your image as a high resolution .jpeg format to get the best quality possible.

Buy some card stock paper at a store such as Wal-Mart or Staples. Card stock paper comes in various colors and can be purchased with or without a gloss coating. Depending on the type of card you have designed, you will also need to have black or colored ink cartridges for your printer. Print out your card and allow enough time for it to dry before placing it in an envelope.
