How to Prevent a Hangover With Vitamin B Complex

Having a hangover is not a good feeling. The best way to cure a hangover is to prevent it. Hangovers occur primarily because of dehydration and cause a headache and lack of energy. B complex vitamins are actually a cluster of eight vitamins: folic acid, biotin, niacin, thiamine, riboflavin, pantothenic acid, pyridoxine, and cyanocobalamin, better known as B12. These vitamins are all in foods we eat everyday, but during hangovers an extra dose is needed. Along with good hydration, vitamin B complex can put a halt to your hangover and restore lost energy.

Instructions

    • 1

Hydrate yourself with water throughout the day. You can also choose vitamin-fortified water. Any of the aforementioned vitamins will be acceptable, but B12 is the most popular choice, as it is in most energy drinks.

    • 2

Take one vitamin earlier in the day, after lunchtime but not right before indulging. This gets your metabolism started. Don't worry if you take more than one, since these vitamins are generally taken for overall good health. As a general rule with any B-vitamin, you should not exceed six in 24 hours.

    • 3

Moderate your consumption while drinking, as this will help the vitamin metabolize the alcohol effectively. Since B vitamins are water soluble, they won't take forever to breakdown the alcohol, which does contain some water.

    • 4

Take another vitamin just before bed, or just before hitting your limit. Once you fall asleep, the vitamin will work to help restore your energy when you wake up. Unlike other non-prescription remedies, vitamin B complex is the most effective at restoring energy.

    • 5

Drink a glass of water upon waking, and make sure you have nothing to do so you can rest. The B vitamin is most effective when you are hydrating yourself.

    • 6

Take a B vitamin upon waking if you forgot to take one before going to sleep. If you were to forgo taking the vitamin, you would experience a greater loss of energy than you would otherwise. Also, hydration wouldn't be attained as quickly without the aid of the B-complex.
