Write a Prisoner

Once you know how to write a prisoner, you can help change a life. Judges, soldiers, the religious, and many other professionals have found that prisoners make great penpals. The goal is to stop crime relapse through letter and e-mail writing. If this sounds like your kind of volunteer work, here's how to write a prisoner:

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Check websites that post photos and contact information, meant especially for people wanting to choose a penpal in prison. You can browse through inmates at international prisons, maximum-security prisons, those who are on death row, and much more. Find someone with whom you will be comfortable.

  2. Step 2

Be cautious about the information you disclose in your letters. Many inmates are in prison for committing serious crimes, and are more than likely to return after being released. Some men and women are in prison for correction and rehabilitation. Either way, about 90% will eventually be released.

  3. Step 3

Remember what letters mean to prisoners. If you make a commitment to be there for an inmate, do not change your mind later. Be kind and sympathetic when you write letters, and mention upfront whether you're seeking romance. Most will be happy just to have a penpal outside of prison.

Tips & Warnings
  • Open a post office box to hide your true address.
  • Check what the rules are regarding letters and photos.
  • Do not disclose information that could be used to track you.
