Enroll in the Professional Upholstery Course at the Foley Belsaw Institute (see Resources section below). The course will teach you how to work with upholstery tools, how to make and stain your own furniture and how to upholster cars and all types of furniture. The course consists of 30 lessons that can be completed at home. The course is geared towards people who want to start a career in professional upholstery.

Take an introductory upholstery course offered by the community education department in your city. Community education courses in upholstery are usually taught by professional upholsterers and are quite affordable. If the community education department in your city doesn't offer upholstery classes, check with your local sewing store to see if they offer upholstery classes.
