How to Install the Toolbar for Windows Live

When using web browsers while performing work-related research, shopping, schoolwork and banking, most people often create numerous shortcuts, links and favorites, in order to keep track of some of the sites and features they find most useful. The Windows Live Toolbar attempts to provide centralized "smart menus" and other such productivity-enhancing features, based on the types of sites people visit and their personal customizations to the Toolbar. In addition, the Windows Live Toolbar allows you to perform an Internet search, no matter what site you are visiting, by providing an "always-on" window that uses Windows Live Search.       Log on to an Internet-connected computer running Windows XP or Vista

      Live Toolbar Download page

      Open your "Internet Explorer Web browser" and go to the Toolbar Live web page. See the Resources section for a link.

      Click "Download."

      Security warning

      You should see a security warning, and at this point, click "Run." Optionally, you may choose to save the WLToolbarSetup_en.exe to a location of your choosing. Make note of that location, and double-click the saved file from that location.

      Final security warning

      Depending on your security settings, you may receive another security warning. If you do, click "Run."

      Terms of Use

      Know that a "Terms of Use" window will appear. Choose the first option, "I agree to the terms of use and privacy statement," and then click "Next."

      Auto update

      Understand that the auto update box, "Keep my computer up to date," will be selected by default. If you manually update your computer, you may want to remove the check from this box. Otherwise, leave it checked, and click "Next."

      Other options

      Know that in the next panel, regarding other options, the defaults are "Standard" (Toolbar options) and USA (region). If necessary, change these and follow any further prompts. Otherwise, leave the defaults selected and click "Next."

      Final options

      Know that the install process will display a green "Progress" bar and, when done, you must select "Yes" (default) or "No," to participate in Microsoft's anonymous performance data collection. Click "Make Live.com My Home Page" and "Make Windows Live Search My Default Search Engine." Click "Finish."

      If all went well during the installation, your browser will display an "Installation Succeeded" message. It is recommended that you now close, then re-open your browser.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you have trouble installing the Windows Live Toolbar, temporarily disable your anti-virus software and try installing again. Note: The Windows Live Toolbar also can work in Firefox browser, if configured properly.

  • Please note that not the Windows Live Toolbar may not install if certain firewall products are enabled. If your antivirus software was disabled for the install and does not have an auto-"re-enable" feature, please remember to re-enable your antivirus software when you have completed the Windows Live Toolbar installation.
