The Ace wrap is a household name in injury treatment. The dull tan color of the Ace wrap is functional, but sometimes you want a wrap that will stand out or match a particular color. When you want a colorful Ace wrap, why not dye it. The steps are straight forward and you can finish the project in an afternoon.

Things You'll Need:

  • Salt
  • Water
  • Bucket
  • Tongs
  • Laundry Detergent
  • Dye
  • Large Spoon Or Stick
  • Rubber Gloves
  • Ace Wrap Bandage

Preparation

Prepare the wrap by washing and rinsing it in hot water. Do not dry.

Boil three gallons of water and pour it into a large bucket or container.

Dissolve one package of powdered dye or half a bottle of liquid dye in two cups of hot water. Add this mixture to the container of water and stir well.

Add one cup of salt and one tablespoon of detergent.

Dyeing

Place the wet Ace wrap in the container of dye.

Stir the wrap for a few minutes using tongs; ensure the dye has coated the entire surface of the Ace wrap.

Let the wrap sit in the dye for 30 minutes or longer. Stir the mixture occasionally during this time. Remember, the longer the item is in the dye, the darker the color will be. Ace wraps have ridges and texture so let the dye penetrate and settle into the fabric for up to an hour.

Remove the wrap from the dye and rinse it well until the water runs clear. Rinse the wrap in warm water, then cooler water gradually.

Dry the wrap in a dryer or on a drying rack.

Tip

Salt helps the dye move through fibers more efficiently to penetrate fabric more thoroughly. Add detergent to the dye bath to ensure even dyeing. This amount of dye can be used for up to a pound of fabric. Different dyes require different methods; follow the specific instructions provided by the manufacturer.

Warnings:

  • Dye will stain most plastics. Clean the container immediately after using it and wear rubber gloves.
