The softball glove is the most important tool for a defensive softball player. Gloves come in a variety of sizes and styles---choose a softball glove in the correct size to ensure successful plays in the field.

Instructions

  1. How to Choose a Softball Glove

    • 1

Select a glove for the appropriate age group at a sports store. Softball gloves come in youth sizes---for children up to age 12---and adult sizes.

    • 2

Try on the glove---your fingers should fill at least half of the finger lengths in the glove.

    • 3

Squeeze the glove as tight as possible, so that it is completely closed. Work the sides of the glove independently, moving your last 2 fingers and first 2 fingers separately.

    • 4

Place a softball inside the glove. You should be able to catch and grip the softball with the webbing of the glove.

    • 5

Field a catch or rolling ball with both the heel and webbing of the glove.

Tips & Warnings

  • Longer gloves are generally used for first basemen. Shorter gloves are used for the middle infield positions, including second base and shortstop.

  • An ill-fitting glove compromises control of the ball during catching and fielding.
