How to Make Hunting Traps & Snares
Survival is much easier today than it once was. Could you survive if stranded on a deserted island? If lost in the woods? One of the keys to survival, after constructing sufficient shelter and locating potable water, is gathering enough food. To gather food, one can either find edible fruits and vegetables or hunt animals for meat. A baited box trap is one of the simplest ways to hunt animals, and you can try one out in your own backyard. A baited box trap requires minimal materials but a lot of patience.

Things You'll Need
- Cardboard box or wooden crate big enough to contain your quarry
- Stick about 12 inches long
- 20 feet or more of string or twine
- Bait (seeds, piece of cheese, vegetables or fruit)

Find a location where your quarry is likely to travel: near a food or water source, along a travel corridor or near its den or nest.

Tie one end of the string or twine near one end of the stick.

Prop the box up, precariously, on the stick, making sure the end of the stick tied to the string is closer to the ground, and making sure the propped-up box allows enough room underneath it for your quarry to investigate the bait.

Place your bait toward the end of the box that is not propped up.

Find yourself a well-concealed hiding spot from where you can pull the string that will drop the box on your unsuspecting quarry.

Leave your end of the string at the well-concealed hiding spot and conceal the rest of the string by covering it with leaves or dirt.

Wait. Wait. Wait some more.

As soon as your quarry steps beneath the propped-up box to investigate the bait, pull the string to drop the box and trap your quarry beneath it.
