How to Open an .srt File Extension

The Subrip format, which has a file extension of ".srt," is used for caption files that are read by video player programs such as Windows Media Player and iTunes. Subrip format files are more commonly known as subtitles. These subtitles can be opened with special programs that are made to run them in conjunction with the movie you are watching. However, it is possible to just open and edit the file with any text editor program such as Notepad or WordPad.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the .srt file that you want to open and edit.

    • 2

Right-click on the file and select to “Properties.”

    • 3

Click on the "General" tab and select “Change.”

    • 4

Select “Notepad or WordPad” from your list of programs on the computer. Select the “Always use the selected program to open this kind of file” option to make sure that the program you choose opens all files with the .srt file extension.

    • 5

Click “OK.” Double-click on the file. The .srt file will open in the program you chose. You will then be able to read and edit the subtitles.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can also edit a subtitle in a video editing program.

  • If you change the file extension from .srt to something else, the file will not be recognized as a subtitle file.
