Use a Stock Dog Whistle

Stockdog Specialties is a company that provides items to farmers and ranchers who wish to train their stock dogs, including whistles. A stock dog is a dog who helps herd the stock, whether it's cattle or sheep. Stock dogs sometimes are also used to herd wild horses. Stockdog whistles are similar to most other dog whistle. They are used to train stock dogs to answer whistle commands, rather than voice commands, because whistles carry farther than a voice command.

Instructions

  1. How to Use a Stock Dog Whistle

    • 1

First, learn how to use the whistle to make different tones. Position the whistle in the mouth so that it is past your teeth, with the tab and end opening of the whistle sticking out of your mouth. Holding the whistle steady with your lips, blow through the hole. Change the pitch of the whistle by changing the distance between the roof of the mouth and your tongue. Practice until you can do at least two or three different pitches.

    • 2

Decide which tone or pitch will be used with which command. You will want to choose a different tone for each command of sit, come, and stay.

    • 3

Give the voice command to your dog, then blow the whistle. For example, tell you dog to "sit", and then blow that pitch quickly and sharply. Continue to do this for about a week or so.

    • 4

Give just the whistle command to your dog. If your dog sits on the first try, be sure to reward him with a treat, such as a piece of cheese or bacon. If the dog seems confused, give the voice command again with the whistle.

    • 5

Continue working with your dog on a daily basis until your dog can obey all three whistle commands without the voice command added. In addition, try giving the whistle commands from a distance. Gradually increase the distance until your dog will follow the command from as far away as you prefer.

Tips & Warnings

  • Try to train every day. Dogs do best with frequent repetition.
