How to Turn a Used Calendar into an Altered Book
It seems a shame to throw away a beautiful calendar filled with favorite images. Instead, use the calendar to make an altered book. It can be used as a journal or sketchbook and you will be able to enjoy the calendar for years to come. Altered books are relatively simple to create and make great gifts.

1
Cut the binding from the calendar. Separate the pages.

Using your ruler to measure, cut each page to 5 1/2 by 8 1/2 inches. When cutting, choose the most visually interesting part of each page. Cut 25 sheets of blank paper in half so they are also 5 1/2 by 8 1/2 inches.

Choose the two calendar pages you want to be the cover and back of the book. Intersperse the other 10 calendar pages throughout the blank pages.
-
4
Line up the left edges of the pages. Working in sections, punch three holes equally spaced along the left edge. Use one page as a guide as you punch further sections so all the holes line up.
-
5
Cut the ribbon into three 6-inch pieces. Put one piece of ribbon through the center hole and tie in a pretty bow. Repeat for the top and bottom holes. Trim the end of each ribbon.

Tips & Warnings
Make a collage from the calendar pictures for the cover of your book. Use yarn or embroidery floss instead of ribbon for the binding. Many copy shops will punch your pages for a small fee.
If your punched holes do not line up, the book will not bind properly.
