If you use a lot of cartons in your home, such as milk and egg cartons, you can save them to be transformed into craft projects. Their shapes lend them to many useful projects which can house a variety of things, from pens and pencils to seedlings to birds. Recycling cartons in this way also saves them from landfills. These are all appropriate projects to do with kids to teach them the importance of recycling.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Paper milk carton
  • Egg carton
  • Potting soil
  • Seeds
  • Scissors or craft knife
  • Juice
  • Wooden craft sticks
  • Plastic wrap
  • Markers (optional)
  • Stickers (optional)
  • Construction paper (optional)
  • Glue (optional)
  1. Step 1

Make an egg carton greenhouse. Fill each of the 12 spaces in the egg carton with potting soil. Water the soil to make sure it is moist. Doing this before you add the seeds helps keep the seeds from washing away or becoming unsettled. Add seeds to the top of the soil. Close the lid and place the egg carton in a warm place. Seeds don't need light to germinate. Once they sprout, open the lid and place the plants in a sunny spot. Once the plants are about 2 to 3 inches tall, transfer each one into a milk carton flower pot.

  2. Step 2

Make a milk carton flower pot. Use scissors or a craft knife to cut a paper milk carton in half, crosswise. Poke holes in the bottom to allow for drainage. Fill it with potting soil to make a perfect flower pot to plant your seedlings in from your egg carton greenhouse.

  3. Step 3

Make an milk carton change bank. You can make this bank with either the paper milk cartons or the plastic gallon jugs. Use markers, paper, stickers or whatever craft supplies you have on hand to decorate a clean, dry milk carton. Use scissors or a craft knife to cut a slit into the top of the carton.

  4. Step 4

Make egg carton ice pops. Cut the top flap off of the carton. Fill each of the 12 reservoirs in an egg carton with your favorite kind of juice. Wrap the carton with plastic wrap. This will help the sticks stand up. Poke a wooden craft stick through the plastic wrap and into the juice. Freeze for 2 to 3 hours. Once the juice is completely frozen, remove the plastic wrap and enjoy your frozen treats.
