The motor is the muscle of the dishwasher, powering the mechanisms that push the water around and actually clean the dishes. When your dishwasher stops working, you should test your motor before replacing it. To test it, connect the motor's wires to a multimeter and check the resistance that registers. If the resistance registers incorrectly, you will need to replace the motor.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Disconnect your dishwasher from its power source. To do this, you may need to unplug the dishwasher or flip the appropriate switch on your circuit breaker.

  2. Step 2

Remove the lower rack in your dishwasher.

  3. Step 3

Remove the sprayer arm. This may entail unscrewing a bolt. Otherwise, pull on the arm while gently rocking it back and forth.

  4. Step 4

Remove the screen beneath the sprayer arm. Beneath the screen will be the pump housing and a panel that covers the motor. The panel will be held in place by two or four screws.

  5. Step 5

Use a screwdriver to remove the screws from the panel. Then remove the panel.

  6. Step 6

Disconnect the two wires on the motor from their harnesses. Then disconnect the drain hose from the pump.

  7. Step 7

Lift the pump and motor together from the dishwasher.

Tips & Warnings
  • To replace the motor, buy a new pump and motor assembly. Make sure to check for leaks after replacing the pump and motor.
  • Keep your work area dry while working on the dishwasher. A wet work area can lead to dangerous electric shocks.
