Things You'll Need:
- Tape
- Clear acetate
- Exacto knife
- Sharpie pen
- Design
- Self-healing mat or smooth cardboard
- Scissors (optional)
- Paper
-
Step 1
Clean your work surface well. Tape the cardboard in place if you aren't using a self-healing mat. Use the Sharpie pen to draw the outline of the design onto the paper.
-
Step 2
Slide the paper underneath the acetate and tape them both to the mat or cardboard. If you need more of the design, use a second piece of acetate, draw the initial design and the extra lines you will need. (This will allow for correct placement when stenciling.)
-
Step 3
Cut the designs out using an exacto knife. When cutting out the second or third part of a design from other pieces of acetate, only cut the section you will need for the stencil. Don't cut the entire illustration out. Use care when cutting corners and rounded edges so they will be smooth.
-
Step 4
When the designs have been cut out, you can reshape them using sharp scissors. Try not to curl the edges of the acetate where you are cutting because they won't lie flat against the surface during the stenciling process.
