1
Create a pattern. Measure across your face at eye level to figure out how wide your mask should be. You want to completely cover the eyes and make the mask long enough that it is slightly wider than the eyes. Measure the length of your eyes as well. Then use this pattern to help shape and cut out your mask. Use fabric that is soft like silk, cotton or flannel. If you are going to heat your mask in the microwave or chill it in the freezer, make sure you use fabric that will withstand temperature changes. Sew the mask on three sides. Leave one side open for filling.

Add flax seed. Fill the eye mask about half full with a filler material. The best filler to use is flax seed as it is soft and will conform to your face. Flax seed is also very lightweight. You can purchase flax seed in any health food store or large supermarket. Do not overfill the mask. It should feel soft and baggy. You want it soft enough that it will not feel stiff when you place it on your face.

Choose your herbs. Next add a few tablespoons of your favorite herbs. If you need a mask to help you relax, try lavender or chamomile. Stronger herbs such as eucalyptus or mints are better for clearing sinuses. Others such as lemon grass can provided a quick pick me up, or you can use roses just for the scent. You may want to make more than one mask if you are dealing with different conditions. One trick is to place the herbs in an empty tea bag before placing them in the mask. This will prevent the herbs from staining the fabric, and it makes it easier to remove and change the herbs.

Finish and use your mask. You can either sew your mask together or use Velcro so you can reopen and change your mask from time to time. To keep your mask smelling fresh, store it in a plastic bag or container. When you want to use your mask, rub it briskly between your hands for a few moments to help release the scent from the herbs. If you are dealing with an inflammatory condition, place the mask in the freezer as the cold will help to constrict the blood vessels and reduce pain. Place the mask in the microwave for just about thirty seconds if you want some soothing heat.
