Make Your Own Princess Cake

A princess cake is relatively easy to make, but will look like it took hours. The cake part will actually be the skirt of a princess doll's dress. It is the ideal cake to make for a little girl's birthday party, and the doll is a fun keepsake. Decorating the cake is something the birthday girl can even help with to make sure it looks exactly the way she wants it to. A princess cake also makes a great centerpiece for the party table.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Box cake mix and ingredients on the box
  • Batter bowl
  • Cake tester
  • Flat butter knife
  • Cooling rack
  • Doll
  • Frosting
  • Cake decorating tubes
  • Candy cake decorations
  1. Step 1

Prepare cake batter as directed on the box. It doesn't matter what flavor of cake you decide to use.

  2. Step 2

Pour the cake batter into an oven-safe batter bowl that has been completely sprayed with non-stick spray. Be liberal with the non-stick spray. If the cake sticks, it could ruin the project. The Pampered Chef 2-quart batter bowl is ideal for this project. Keep in mind the deeper the batter bowl is, the longer the doll's skirt will be.

  3. Step 3

Bake the cake for the time listed on the box for a bunt cake. It usually takes around an hour. When you think the cake is finished, be sure to insert a cake tester in all the way to the bottom to make sure the cake is cooked through.

  4. Step 4

Slide the cake out of the batter bowl and on to a cooling rack to allow it to cool completely. The cake needs to be completely cooled before you can do anything else so you may want to bake the cake the day before you'll need it. When you take the cake out of the batter bowl, simply invert the bowl over the cooling rack and the cake should slide out. The bottom of the cake in the batter bowl will actually be the top of the skirt, once you decorate it.

  5. Step 5

Take a Barbie or barbie-like doll and insert it feet first into the cake up to the doll's waist. Lift the dolls arms up over her head before you insert it into the cake to make sure they don't dig in.

  6. Step 6

Cover the cake with an undercoat of frosting, then use different colored frosting, cake decorating tubes and candy to decorate the cake to look like the skirt of the princesses dress. Use the frosting to also decorate the chest of the doll to make the top of the dress match the skirt, or you can decorate the cake to match a top you already put on the doll.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use a flat butter knife to loosen the cake from the edges of the batter bowl before you try to take the cake out.
  • Do not put the doll in the cake before you cook it. The doll will melt or catch fire.
