How to Layer Shoulder-Length Hair

How a person wears her hair helps to define her sense of style and fashion. Shoulder-length hair will help to maintain a youthful look but layers will add a sophistication that frames the face, defining the natural features that make a person beautiful.

Things You'll Need

  • Scissors
  • Comb
  • Hair clips

Instructions

    • 1

Comb the hair to remove all tangles. Find the crown of the head--part of the top of the head that is in line with the tips of the ears.

    • 2

Create a line from the tip of the right ear across to the crown all the way down to the left ear tip. Comb all hair in front of this line into a section and clip it out of the way.

    • 3

Take the hair from the nape (base of the skull at the neck) and comb it up, holding it in your hand at the crown. Be sure you are holding the hair so that the scissors will cut it horizontally below where you are holding it. Cut the desired length off. Allow the hair to naturally fall into layers.

    • 4

Now take the sectioned hair from Step 2 and split it into two sections down the center of the head toward the front of the face. Put the hair from the left section in a clip off to the side so it is out of your way.

    • 5

Using a small portion of the back section already cut, comb it up with the new section on the right to measure where you will cut. Again, comb the hair from the ear up toward the crown and hold it with the desired length under your fingers. Take the scissors and cut in line horizontally with the section previously cut from the back.

    • 6

Repeat Step 5 for the left side.

    • 7

Check to see if the left and right lengths match. Pull left and right sides forward making sure they are the same length. Trim fly-away hairs and areas that may be slightly longer.

Tips & Warnings

  • This is a basic way of cutting layers that is effective. For more precise cuts, make more sections with less hair per section. This is especially true for thicker hair.
