Replace Pool Table Felt

Pool has its roots in the popular lawn game, croquet. It was once played by nobility and commoners alike, and can be traced back to the 15th century. According to the Billiard Congress of America, the croquet game was moved inside and played on a table covered with green fabric to represent grass. Over time, this fabric has taken on many colors, but green is still the most popular. Today, the acrylic felt is the covering of choice for pool tables. While it is a very durable fabric, after extended use it does need to be replaced.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length and width of the table and add an extra foot on each side to accommodate the table rails.

    • 2

Remove the table rails by unscrewing the screws located on the underside of the table.

    • 3

Pull up the old felt and discard.

    • 4

Place the felt over the table surface.

    • 5

Use a staple gun to secure the felt. Start in the center of one side and put in a staple. Move toward the corners, stapling and pulling the fabric tight as you go. Stop three inches from each corner.

    • 6

Repeat the stapling process on the remaining three sides.

    • 7

Cut your felt into three strips at each of the corners. Make one cut on either side of the corner and one right at the corner.

    • 8

Fold the felt into the corner, pull it tight and staple it down to the table.

    • 9

Wrap the remaining fabric around the side rails. If there is too much extra fabric, trim it to fit the side rails.

    • 10

Put the side rails in place and screw them back onto the table.
