Things You'll Need:
- Fence posts
- Post hole digger
- Cement
- Shovel
- Trowel
- Post level
- Measuring tape
- Crayon
-
Step 1
Dig the hole for the posts. Once you have staked out the property for the fence and determined the placing for all of your posts, you can start digging the terminal post holes. Terminal post holes should be 8 inches around and about 30 inches deep. The bottom of the hole should be wider than the top to anchor in the cement.
-
Step 2
Measure the height of the fence fabric and add two inches. Mark the posts from the top down with this measurement and mark the post with a crayon. The rest of the post will be what is placed in the hole.
-
Step 3
Place the post in the hole and center. Use a post level and get the post plumb. Pour in the concrete around the post or shovel it in, and then recheck the plumb. Over fill the hole and slope the concrete down with a trowel to keep water from pooling around the pole.
-
Step 4
Once the concrete hardens enough that the posts will not move, run a string between the terminal posts four inches from the top. This will be the line for your line posts.
-
Step 5
Dig the holes for your line posts 6 inches around and 24 inches deep with the bottom of the hole being larger than the top.
-
Step 6
Set the line posts in the same manner as the terminal posts using the string as a height guide and checking for level and plumb. The string should be the height of the fencing fabric minus 2 inches which is a 4 inch difference from the terminal posts. Crown the cement with a trowel and allow the cement to set.
