1
Put a hook on the end of your line, if you plan on using live bait to catch your trout. The fish love shrimp and a live one hooked on your line, will surely attract a trout to taste it. They've even been known to bite on dead shrimp. No matter whether they're dead or alive, shrimp are an almost guaranteed bait, when fishing for trout.

2
Bend a piece of split shot on the line about six inches from the hook. This will add extra weight to the line and keep the shrimp in the water. If there's not enough weight, the shrimp will just swim on top. Your odds are better in catching a fish, if the bait is submerged in the water. Usually you can squeeze the split shot together with your fingers and you won't need a pair of pliers.

Hook a bobber on your line, if you want to see when the fish hits it. Put the bobber on the line at the depth of the water you're fishing in. For example, if the water is five feet deep, you'll want your bobber at about the four foot point on your line.

Tie a spoon lure on the end of your line to attract the trout. Spoon lures are a versatile fishing lure, that you'll find many fish are attracted to. Extra weight won't be needed on the line, since the spoon will have some weight to it. You can purchase spoon lures in different weight sizes. A small to medium size spoon, is all you'll need to catch trout with.

5
Rig your line with an artificial shrimp lure. They come in an array of colors and many anglers have different ideas of which color works best. These lures look just like a shrimp and some have flavor added to them to better attract the trout. You won't need to add extra weight to your line in most cases, because the artificial shrimp is weighted.
