How to Keep a Cat from Vomiting While Taking Zithromax
Zithromax is the brand name for the antibiotic axithromycin made by Pfizer. It is usually prescribed for bacterial infections like skin infections or upper respiratory infections or urinary tract infections. It comes in both liquid and pill form, but liquids are less likely to be regurgitated by the cat. A normal side effect of Zithromax is vomiting because antibiotics can kill all good digestive bacteria along with any bacteria causing infections.

1
Remove all food dishes and stop letting your cat feed from a dish whenever he wants to.
-
2
Give the Zithromax one to two hours before feeding. According to the manufacturer, this antibiotic works best on an empty stomach. Also, without any food in the stomach, your cat may be less prone to vomiting.
-
-
3
Feed only half the food you normally give your cat. This keeps your cat from bolting down too much food at once and triggering vomiting.
-
4
Wait for an hour to see if your cat still has kept the food down. If so, then give the other half of the food you would usually serve.
-
5
Give the next dose of Zithromax with a small tsp. of yogurt with live cultures. According to the Canadian Cat Association Fancy Club, many cats have been able to keep down antibiotics with a small bit of yogurt to provide good bacteria to replace the good digestive bacteria killed by the Zithromax. Repeat Steps 3 and 4.

6
Call the vet if your cat is still vomiting. Also, call the vet if your cat has trouble breathing, has tremors or starts getting bloody diarrhea.

Tips & Warnings
Try to get unflavored yogurt. If the cat refuses it, try cottage cheese. Although Zithromax works best on an empty stomach, it won't work if it keeps getting tossed up. A tiny bit of food may be enough to keep vomiting at bay. Your vet will let you know how often to administer Zithromax. Depending on the infection, it may be once per 12 hours, once per 24 hours or once every other day.
Avoid abruptly stopping Zithromax unless the vet advises it. Like with other antibiotics, your cat needs to take the entire course or else risk the infection returning.
