Clever marketing has deemed everything from dog food to popcorn "gourmet." The definition is relative, but it generally incorporates three things: high-quality ingredients, skillful preparation and artful presentation. Cooking gourmet food, then, takes time, practice, money to afford what is needed for both ingredients and implements, and the patience to determine a clever and appetizing presentation. Only those with a passion for knowing the intricacies of food are typically up to the task. If you are just starting out, it is helpful to narrow your scope to a particular cuisine or food type before learning about what goes into making it the "gourmet" way.

    How to Cook Gourmet Food

  1. Step 1

Find recipes you wish to follow from a recipe book or a Web site. Choose from-scratch recipes, meaning those that provide ingredients and steps to follow for all elements of the recipe such as a stock or roux. Remember that gourmet food is not necessarily exotic or complex; however, skillful preparation will at first take longer than unskilled.

  2. Step 2

Make sure you have all of the necessary ingredients, and that they are of the highest quality, in the proper amounts. Familiarize yourself with each one so that you understand how they interact and why each is a part of the recipes. Detailed cookbooks will sometimes provide the history of a recipe. Read it. Later, when you're eating the food, you will appreciate everything about it.

  3. Step 3

Prepare the gourmet food by following the recipes. You may need to make each recipe multiple times before you are skilled at achieving the results required.

  4. Step 4

Make the food look as appealing and as beautiful as possible on the plate. Drizzle sauces in patterns across the plate before putting the food on top. Use fresh herbs to add color. Stack the food, but not too high, in a surprisingly beautiful way.

  5. Step 5

When you have perfected the recipe and its presentation, consider inviting guests for a dinner party, particularly those who appreciate food as much as you do.
