Learn how to manage naturally wavy hair

If you have wavy tresses and envy those people with wash-and-wear straight locks, you simply may have not yet discovered the ways you can manage your wavy hair so that it looks its best. While you can straighten your hair with a flat iron on the days you don't feel like dealing with your curls, there are techniques you can use to make the most of your natural-born waves. Taking the time to get to know your hair and its needs will help you in your ongoing quest to make it look healthy and attractive.

    Instructions

    Things You'll Need

    • Towel
    • Curly hair serum
    • Diffuser (optional)
    • Spray bottle
    • Jaw clip
    • Thermal styling protectant
    • Tourmaline or ceramic flat iron

Wash and condition your hair as usual, absorbing excess water with a towel. Work a serum for curly hair into your waves and style your hair with your fingers, rather than with a comb or brush, as either of these will break down your waves. Scrunch your hair for tighter waves. Allow hair to air-dry or use a diffuser if you want more body (see Resources for a video).

Pull your hair into a ponytail or into a half-up, half-down style if you want your tresses out of your face. To show off your waves, mist them with water in a spray bottle and apply the serum for curly hair, scrunching your waves to enhance their shape.

Gather your hair as though you are pulling it into a ponytail, but twist it, leaving the ends loose so that you end up creating a half-bun. Fasten this in place with a jaw clip. Style the waves poking out so they are shaped the way want them. This is an ideal way to style your hair on days when you haven't washed it and are uncomfortable wearing it down.

Invest in a mid-size ceramic or tourmaline flat iron if your natural waves are loose and lazy and you want more defined curls in a matter of minutes. After applying thermal styling protectant, clamp down on a fine section of hair and twist your wrist inward toward your head, maintaining this position as you slide the flat iron down the lock of hair (see Resources for a video).

Avoid damaging your hair with thermal styling tools by sleeping with your hair in braids to enhance your natural waves. For finer waves, create multiple braids. Stick with one or two for mid-size to large waves.

    Tips & Warnings

    • Nourish your tresses with a shampoo and conditioner made for naturally wavy or curly hair. Wavy hair is drier than straight hair, as the scalp's oils cannot make their way down the hair shaft of curly hair as quickly as on straight hair.
