Instructions

    • 1

Narrow your area of focus. If you've not already done so, decide if you're interested in marketing and public relations, publishing, working for a newspaper, magazine, radio or television station or in an entirely different medium of communication.

    • 2

Join online job boards. Along with the obvious job websites, register with Indeed.com, CommunicationsJobs.net and other sites specific to people with a degree in communication. Your college may also have job listings.

    • 3

Build your resume. Engage in freelance writing opportunities online and in your local area for small weekly magazines and publications. If you're just starting out, explore options for internships or temporary positions at television or radio stations, as well as for magazines or public relations firms. These opportunities sometimes lead to permanent jobs.

Network whenever possible. Let it be known that you're looking for a job within the communication field. Volunteer your time with a nonprofit organization or church and offer to create brochures, press releases or edit a newsletter. Set up informational interviews, where you'll have the opportunity to meet with communication professionals to ask questions about their work and seek advice about your own path in the communication field.

Tips & Warnings

  • Take advantage of internships. Write as much as possible--both pro bono and paid opportunities. Consider positions with nonprofits or temporary positions to gain experience.

  • Don't rule out relocating to a larger city if you're looking for increased opportunities in the communication field. Be patient and proactive; communication positions are highly competitive in many markets. Don't expect to earn a high salary in the beginning.

Thanks for posting this. I'm currently a Communication major working on my bachelors. I just finished college and I know I want to stick with Communications as my major but it scares me to know that there are so many options with this degree. This is definitely helpful!
