How to Wear a Yarmulke

Many Jewish men choose to wear a yarmulke whether they are orthodox, conservative or reform. This traditional head covering shows that the divine is above man and, therefore, heads must be covered in fear. Men who are interested in learning how to wear a yarmulke need to know a few steps to be on their way to wearing one with confidence and irreverence.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Begin by placing the head covering toward the back of the head.

    • 2

Smooth the yarmulke down to the head or scalp. It should be flexible enough to fit many head shapes well.

    • 3

Using your bobby pins, start pinning on the right side of the head by gathering a small amount of hair and sliding the bobby pin into the hair and the yarmulke at the same time.

    • 4

Place pins so that there is one on each side and one in the back. A pin in front is typically not necessary unless there's a lot of thick hair. Use as many pins as it takes to hold the yarmulke on.

    • 5

Test the placement of your yarmulke by bending your head from side to side and front to back to see if it slides off or moves.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do these steps in front of a mirror. Many men own head coverings for different occasions. Decide ahead of time which yarmulke to wear depending upon whether an event is casual or formal.
